Bas van Wieringen - Vieren wat kapot is
(Celebrating What is Broken )

The work 'Portrait of the Nail Behind the Canvas' by Bas van Wieringen was accidentally painted over by a museum employee. In the documentary
Celebrating What is Broken the artist is exploring whether he can add value to it himself once again.

Bas van Wieringen's art is characterized by humor and a unique perspective on reality. So when his work 'Portrait of the Nail Behind the Canvas' was painted over, he found it mostly funny and interesting. Much of his work, including this piece, blends into the museum, allowing unsuspecting visitors to overlook it easily. And that is exactly what happened: while painting the museum walls white, the employee thought this was a section of wall that needed to be painted.

"Celebrating What is Broken" is a documentary that raises the question of what exactly (modern) art is. Can van Wieringen exhibit this painted-over piece as "his art" even though he didn't conceptualize the painting over? Or must additional value be added once again? And if so, is it then suitable for the museum walls?
